Stancliff, John W. (1814-?)
Born in Connecticut, he was active as a daguerreian in Hartford, Conn., and Louisville, Ken. In 1842 he was listed as a teacher of business writing, drawing, bookkeeping, etc. in Hartford. In 1846-1847 he was listed as a daguerreian in partnership as Cary (P..) and Stancliff. In 1847 he was listed alone at 158 Main Street. His ad noted a free exhibition of daguerreian portraits and miniatures at the gallery, over Olmstead, Thatcher and Goodrich's store, corner of Main and Pearl Streets. He noted he used German Voigtlander cameras, including one which made a picture twice the size of any other in the state. He also noted he used a reflector for unreversed landscapes, etc., and offered instruction. He was listed at the same location in 1848, and noted he had won first premiums for his daguerreotypes for the past three years. From 1850 to 1852 he was listed at the "Kentucky Daguerreian Gallery", over 517 Main Street, Louisville, Ken., five doors below Third Street. He also conducted experiments in artificial light photography with Prof. Benjamin Silliman, Jr., dates unknown.

Listed as a daguerreian in Roxbury and Boston, Mass. From 1849 to 1852 he was listed at 79 Washington Street, Roxbury. He advertised the Washington Daguerreian Saloon in Bacon's Block. In 1849 an ad for S.F.Lancey & Co. noted that Starkweather had previously been a member of the firm, but had severed his relationship. Another source indicated that Starkweather bought out Lacey in 1850; this seems unlikely. From 1854 to 1860 he was listed in Boston; from 1854 to 1857 as a daguerreotypist at 631 Washington Street, and dealer in fancy goods at 633 Washington Street. Claiming to be a pupil of S.F.B. Morse, he advertised in New York City, N.Y., in October, 1841, claiming to take daguerreotypes and "only a few seconds necessary." Probably the same T.N. Starr who had a gallery in Sauerbier's Saloon, north side of Penn Street above 5th Street, Reading, Pa. in September, 1841. He noted he was from New York. In December, 1841 he advertised in Richmond, Va. in partnership with Jonas Edwards as Starr and Edwards. Probably the same as Thomas S. (A.) Starr, listed as a daguerreian in San Francisco, Calif., 1852 to 1856. One source listed him in 1852 in partnership with C.F. Hamilton at 163 Clay Street. In 1863 Starr was joined by C.E. Daguerreian, Warsaw, N.Y., 1857. Identification of this daguerreian comes from a letterhead from another store in the same block in Warsaw. The letterhead carries an engraving of the building at the corner of Main and Buffalo Streets. Included are the Wyoming County Mirror, and the businesses of L.E. Walker, S.A. Murray; Watson Murray & Co.; and "Stevens Daguerrean Rooms." The letter is dated September 16, 1857. Interestingly enough, L.E. Walker was also a publisher of stereo views, although not at this time.
